The fact that rural regions also have a rich and modern building culture full of a willingness to experiment is particularly evident in the Euroregion Neisse. From 2012 to 2014, our German-Czech team visited the sites of the Topography of the modern movement and documented itsstories. The new demands on spaces and functionality gave rise to a variety of building types at the beginning of the 20th century. The glass, coal and textile industry companies that shaped the landscape between the Elbe and Neisse rivers in the first half of the 20th century caused enormous population growth in formerly little towns. Cities such as Zittau, Görlitz, Liberec and Jablonec nad Nisou grew into industrial centres. There was a great need for architects who were prepared to break new ground. The entrepreneurs and mayors often found their master builders at the innovative schools of architecture in Dessau, Berlin, Prague and Wroclaw.

This house, built in 1933 by the German architect Hans Scharoun, is today one of the most outstanding 20th Century houses in the world. It was built for Fritz Schminke, the owner of a noodle factory, and features a number of highly practical details precisely crafted to suit the lifestyle of his family of six. The design of the structure is reminiscent of a ship, which is why the people of Löbau call it Nudeldampfer - »the noodle steamer«. The Schminke family left Löbau for the West-German town Celle in the 1950s and left the house to the local municipality, which then used it as a home for the Pioneer Organization and later as a club house. Its continued use as a club house was supported by the extensive reconstruction work by the Wüstenrot Foundation in 2000. In 2007 it became the property of the Haus Schminke Foundation, who now take care of the preservation and dissemination of the house and its history. As the centre for the »Topography of Modern Buildings« it is today a well-known venue for tourists from all over the world. It is not only open for viewing, but you may also even book it for an overnight stay.
